The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project has intensified preparations toward the temporary closure of the westbound lane of the Dr. Busia Highway, from Pamprom Junction to First Light, as part of efforts to commence construction of a new underground storm drainage system.
In anticipation of the closure, the GARID Project Team, in collaboration with its contractor and supervising consultant, has engaged key stakeholders within the Kaneshie enclave. The consultations brought together management of the Kaneshie Market Complex, traders’ associations, transport union leaders, hawkers, artisans, and representatives of nearby educational institutions—groups expected to be directly affected by the upcoming works.
The Project’s Communications Specialist, Philip Dornyo, stated that the engagement forms part of a broader communication strategy aimed at ensuring all affected stakeholders are well informed, adequately prepared, and actively involved throughout the construction period.
He further explained that, to deepen public awareness and reduce potential disruptions, the project will in the coming days roll out a range of communication activities including mass media campaigns, mobile van announcements, and targeted community outreach initiatives.
The GARID Project noted that this proactive approach reflects its commitment to transparency, stakeholder inclusion, and effective communication, as it works to deliver climate-resilient infrastructure aimed at improving flood management across the Greater Accra Region.
The temporary road closure is expected to facilitate critical drainage works that will help reduce flooding and enhance mobility in one of Accra’s busiest commercial hubs. Authorities are urging the public to cooperate and adhere to traffic management directives during the construction period.
